Overview

Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus JB-1 is a specific probiotic strain, formerly classified as *Lactobacillus rhamnosus*, that is extensively studied for its role in the microbiota-gut-brain axis. Often characterized as a "psychobiotic," JB-1 has demonstrated the ability to modulate the central nervous system and immune functions. Its primary mechanism involves signaling through the vagus nerve to communicate with the brain, which subsequently alters the expression of GABA receptors in regions such as the hippocampus and amygdala. Additionally, JB-1 exhibits immunomodulatory effects by inducing regulatory T cells and increasing the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines like Interleukin-10. Preclinical research has shown that JB-1 can reduce anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors, attenuate stress-induced corticosterone levels, and influence seizure susceptibility and the efficacy of antiseizure medications like sodium valproate. It is primarily developed and researched by the Brain-Body Institute at McMaster University in collaboration with PrecisionBiotics.
