Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus R3 (also known as LR-R3) is a probiotic bacterium strain being investigated for its antagonistic activity against multidrug-resistant (MDR) and carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) strains, as well as other ESKAPE pathogens. Developed by researchers at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) and the Centro de Referencia para Lactobacilos (CERELA-CONICET) in Argentina, this strain produces bioactive compounds or metabolites that exert strong antimicrobial and bactericidal effects. In co-culture studies, L. rhamnosus R3 has been shown to alter iron and fatty acid metabolism in A. baumannii, disrupt cell viability, and increase the formation of outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) and nanotubes. It represents a promising non-antibiotic therapeutic alternative for combating nosocomial infections.
