Overview

Lactobacillus plantarum ATCC-202195 (reclassified as Lactiplantibacillus plantarum ATCC 202195) is a live biotherapeutic probiotic strain developed for the prevention of neonatal sepsis and other infections in newborns. Originally isolated from the stool of a healthy infant, the strain is typically administered as a synbiotic in combination with the prebiotic fructooligosaccharide (FOS). Its mechanism of action involves colonizing the infant gut, strengthening the intestinal mucosal barrier, and modulating the neonatal immune system to prevent the translocation of pathogens into the systemic circulation. A landmark clinical trial in rural India, involving over 4,500 newborns and funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, demonstrated that early administration of this synbiotic reduced the incidence of sepsis and respiratory tract infections by approximately 40%. International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF) is the primary manufacturer and commercial supplier of the strain.
