Overview

Lactiplantibacillus plantarum HD02 is a probiotic bacterial strain originally isolated from the fermented food kimchi. It is being developed by HEM Pharma as a live biotherapeutic for the prevention and treatment of allergic diseases, specifically atopic dermatitis (eczema). The strain's mechanism of action involves the inhibition of mast cell degranulation, which leads to a reduction in the release of inflammatory mediators and decreased vascular permeability. In preclinical murine models of atopic dermatitis induced by MC903 or house dust mites, L. plantarum HD02 demonstrated the ability to lower blood levels of mast cell protease-1 (MCPT-1) and total IgE, while increasing the population of splenic Foxp3+ regulatory T cells and reducing immune cell infiltration in draining lymph nodes. The strain exhibits therapeutic efficacy through both the live bacteria and its secreted metabolites in cell-free culture supernatant.
