Drug intelligence / Profile preview
*Lactiplantibacillus plantarum* IOB602 (LP602) is a specific probiotic bacterial strain, formerly classified within the *Lactobacillus* genus, that is being investigated for its psychobiotic and postbiotic potential in treating depression. Research indicates that the strain and its derived postbiotics can ameliorate depression-like behaviors by modulating the gut-brain axis. Its mechanism of action involves the regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis (reducing stress-induced hyperactivity), increasing the levels of monoamine neurotransmitters such as serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain, and promoting a healthy gut microbiota composition that increases the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). It is currently in the preclinical research stage, primarily focused on mental health and neuroendocrine regulation.
