Overview

Lactiplantibacillus plantarum SKO-001 is a probiotic bacterial strain isolated from the root of Korean angelica (*Angelica gigas*). [3, 7] It is being developed by Kolmar BNH as a dietary supplement for weight management. [1, 2] A 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial involving 100 overweight adults demonstrated that a daily dose of 20 billion colony-forming units (CFU) in a capsule form led to a significant reduction in body fat percentage and fat mass compared to a placebo. [1, 2, 7] In addition to reducing body fat, the supplement was also found to significantly decrease LDL cholesterol and the hormone leptin, while increasing levels of adiponectin. [1, 2, 7] The anti-obesity effects are believed to be mediated through the modulation of the gut microbiome, which in turn influences lipid metabolism and adipogenesis by downregulating genes such as SREBP-1c, PPAR-γ, and C/EBPα. [2] The clinical trial was funded by its manufacturer, Kolmar BNH. [1, 2]
