Overview

Lactiplantibacillus plantarum TJA7 is a specific probiotic strain belonging to the Lactiplantibacillus genus, formerly classified as Lactobacillus plantarum. It is being investigated for its potential therapeutic role in managing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and related metabolic dysfunctions. The strain's mechanism of action involves strengthening the intestinal barrier, as evidenced by increased transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER), and promoting the translocation of the short-chain fatty acid butyrate. At the cellular level, TJA7 modulates the gut-pancreas-liver axis by activating key metabolic signaling pathways, including the IRS1/AKT and AMPK/PGC-1α axes, which leads to reduced oxidative stress, enhanced insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells, and improved hepatic glucose handling. While often studied in combination with phytochemicals like Mulberry Leaf extract, the TJA7 strain independently contributes to metabolic homeostasis through its influence on the gut microbiota and systemic signaling.
