Overview

Lactiplantibacillus plantarum WB4404 is a probiotic bacterial strain isolated from kimchi that exhibits potential antineoplastic activity. In preclinical studies using HT-29 human colorectal cancer cells, WB4404 has been shown to inhibit cell proliferation and induce intrinsic apoptosis. The mechanism involves the modulation of the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and the subsequent activation of the caspase cascade, specifically caspase-9 and caspase-3. Additionally, the strain produces exopolysaccharides that contribute to its cytotoxic effects against cancer cells. It is currently being explored as a functional food ingredient and a candidate for microbiome-based therapy in the context of colorectal cancer.
