Overview

Lactiplantibacillus plantarum WB4503 is a probiotic bacterial strain isolated from kimchi that has demonstrated potential anticancer activity. In vitro studies using HT-29 human colorectal cancer cells show that the strain inhibits cell proliferation and induces apoptosis via the intrinsic pathway. This mechanism involves the activation of caspase-3 and caspase-9, along with an increase in the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, which promotes programmed cell death. Additionally, metabolites such as exopolysaccharides produced by the bacteria are suggested to contribute to its anti-proliferative effects. WB4503 is being investigated as a candidate for functional food applications and as a probiotic intervention for the management of colorectal cancer.
