Overview

Lactiplantibacillus plantarum WCFS1, previously known as Lactobacillus plantarum WCFS1, is a specific probiotic strain of bacteria originally isolated from human saliva. [1, 3, 14] It is one of the most well-characterized probiotic strains, being the first Lactobacillus species to have its entire genome sequenced in 2003. [1, 10] Due to its robustness and high survival rate through the gastrointestinal tract, it has been extensively studied for its potential health benefits. [1, 12] Clinical and preclinical research suggests it may modulate the host's immune system and improve intestinal barrier function. [2, 11] It is widely used in functional genomics research as a model organism for lactic acid bacteria and has been explored for various applications, from functional foods to a potential delivery vehicle for therapeutic compounds.
