Overview

Ambitol Fiber is a combination pharmaceutical product developed by Ambiens Pharmaceuticals, primarily indicated for the management of chronic constipation. It consists of two active components: lactitol monohydrate and ispaghula husk (also known as psyllium). Lactitol is a synthetic disaccharide that functions as an osmotic laxative; it remains unabsorbed in the upper gastrointestinal tract and is fermented by colonic bacteria into organic acids, which increases osmotic pressure and draws water into the intestinal lumen. Ispaghula husk is a bulk-forming laxative that absorbs water to form a mucilaginous mass, thereby increasing stool volume and stimulating natural bowel movements. The synergistic effect of these two ingredients helps to soften the stool and improve colonic transit time.
