Overview

This combination therapy, evaluated in the DesProbiOXA pilot study (NCT02307383), consists of the prebiotic lactitol (Emportal) and a probiotic mixture (Infloran) containing *Lactobacillus acidophilus* and *Bifidobacterium bifidum*. Developed by the Instituto de Investigación Hospital Universitario La Paz, it is designed for the intestinal decolonization of carriers of OXA-48-producing *Klebsiella pneumoniae*. The mechanism of action involves the modulation of the gastrointestinal microbiota to reduce the colonization of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae through competitive exclusion and the promotion of a non-permissive environment for antibiotic-resistant strains. The proof-of-concept trial demonstrated that the combination was well-tolerated and resulted in a rapid reduction of intestinal loads of OXA-48-producing bacteria.
