**Lacto-N-fucopentaose I** is a fucosylated human milk oligosaccharide naturally present in human breast milk and is being developed primarily as a nutritional ingredient for early-life nutrition rather than as a conventional therapeutic pharmaceutical. It has been developed by **DSM-Firmenich** under the brand **GLYCARE LNFP I** for use in products such as infant formula intended to support gut and immune health. Mechanistically, it is thought to act through host-pathogen interaction modulation rather than a single canonical drug target: reported activities include acting as a soluble decoy glycan that inhibits pathogen adhesion to intestinal surfaces, interference with bacterial toxin binding, modulation of intestinal microbiota, and antiviral effects associated with reduced viral adsorption, lower VP1-related enteroviral interaction, and attenuation of infection-associated oxidative stress and apoptosis. Reported preclinical or translational activity has included enteroviruses such as Enterovirus 71, rhinoviruses, and group B Streptococcus, but its principal positioning is as an HMO nutritional bioactive for infant nutrition.
