Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lactobacillus acidophilus + Bifidobacterium animalis/lactis is a probiotic combination drug consisting of two specific bacterial strains: Lactobacillus acidophilus La-5 (LA-5) and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12 (BB-12). Formulated under the brand name Probio-Tec AB-25, this live biotherapeutic product is designed to modulate the gut microbiome and the intestinal immune environment. Its mechanism of action involves exerting anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, specifically by regulating the secretion of cytokines such as Interleukin-10 (IL-10), Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β), Interferon gamma (IFN-γ), and Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) by immune cells within the intestinal mucosa. The combination was primarily investigated by Hvidovre University Hospital for the maintenance of remission in patients with left-sided ulcerative colitis and proctitis. However, clinical trial results (NCT00268164) indicated that the treatment did not provide a statistically significant benefit over placebo in maintaining clinical remission over a 52-week period.
