Overview

Lactobacillus acidophilus + bifidobacterium bifidum + lactobacillus reuteri + lactobacillus fermentum is an oral probiotic mixture developed by researchers at Kashan University of Medical Sciences. It is being investigated as a live biotherapeutic product for the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD). The mixture aims to modulate the gut-brain axis and the immune system. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial involving 60 patients, 12 weeks of supplementation with this 4-strain mixture (8×10^9 CFU) significantly improved motor function as measured by the Movement Disorders Society-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS). Preclinical evidence suggests the mixture reduces lipid peroxidation, prevents neuronal damage in the substantia nigra, and improves cognitive function and rotational behavior in animal models of PD.
