Overview

Lactobacillus acidophilus 74-2 is a specific strain of the species Lactobacillus acidophilus, a Gram-positive lactic acid bacterium widely used as a probiotic. This strain has been studied in combination with Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis DGCC 420 for its effects on human health, particularly in modulating immune responses and altering gut microbiota composition[1]. In clinical studies, supplementation with L. acidophilus 74-2 increased its presence in fecal samples and was associated with enhanced phagocytic activity of granulocytes and monocytes (a marker of non-specific cellular immune response), as well as a significant reduction in serum triglyceride levels[1]. The general mechanism of action for L. acidophilus strains involves colonization of the gastrointestinal tract where they compete with pathogenic bacteria, produce lactic acid to lower pH (inhibiting harmful microbes), and interact with host immune cells to modulate immunity[4][6][9]. Probiotics like this are primarily indicated for supporting digestive health, preventing or treating antibiotic-associated diarrhea, managing some vaginal infections, and potentially improving certain metabolic parameters[4][6].
