Overview

Lactobacillus acidophilus CL1285 is a proprietary probiotic bacterial strain originally developed by Bio-K+ International (now part of Kerry Group). It is the primary constituent of the Bio-K+ probiotic line, often formulated alongside Lacticaseibacillus casei LBC80R and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus CLR2. The strain is clinically recognized for its efficacy in the primary prevention of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) and antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) in hospitalized patients. Its therapeutic effects are mediated through the modulation of the gut microbiota, competitive inhibition of pathogens, and the production of antimicrobial metabolites. Furthermore, L. acidophilus CL1285 has demonstrated the ability to neutralize C. difficile toxins A and B and possesses enzymatic activities, such as bile salt hydrolase and feruloyl esterase, which suggest potential benefits in managing dyslipidemia and hypercholesterolemia. It is also investigated for its role in improving symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and chronic hand dermatitis.
