Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lactobacillus acidophilus KBL409 is a probiotic bacterial strain isolated from the feces of a healthy Korean male donor, developed by KoBioLabs and its joint venture weBiom. It is being investigated for its therapeutic and protective effects in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and atopic dermatitis. In preclinical models of CKD, KBL409 administration reduces kidney fibrosis, decreases serum levels of uremic toxins (such as indoxyl sulfate and p-cresyl sulfate), and improves mitochondrial function by restoring PGC-1α and AMPK expression. In a multi-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled human study, KBL409 supplementation significantly reduced serum indoxyl sulfate concentrations by modulating the gut microbiota. Additionally, KBL409 has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties in mouse models of atopic dermatitis, reducing dermatitis scores and downregulating Th1, Th2, and Th17 cytokines.
