Overview

Lactobacillus acidophilus KS400 is a probiotic bacterial strain that serves as the active ingredient in Gynoflor, a vaginal tablet developed by Medinova AG. It is a live biotherapeutic modality administered vaginally to restore the healthy vaginal microbiome, treat vaginal atrophy, and prevent the recurrence of bacterial vaginosis. L. acidophilus KS400 works by colonizing the vaginal epithelial surface and producing antimicrobial metabolites, including lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and a ~7.5 kDa bacteriocin. These metabolites inhibit the growth of urogenital pathogens such as Gardnerella vaginalis, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In clinical trials, it has been evaluated both as a monotherapy and in combination with ultra-low-dose estriol (oestriol) to promote vaginal epithelial maturation and re-establish a protective lactobacillary flora.
