Lactobacillus acidophilus L-92 is a specific strain of probiotic bacteria, often used in a heat-killed (paraprobiotic or postbiotic) form. [5, 6, 11, 12] It was developed by the Japanese company Asahi Group, stemming from its research on Calpis cultured milk products. [1, 3] L-92 has been clinically studied for its ability to alleviate symptoms of allergic conditions, most notably atopic dermatitis in both adults and children. [3] Studies show that oral administration can significantly reduce the severity of skin symptoms. [3] It is also investigated for hay fever and perennial allergic rhinitis. [3] The proposed mechanism of action is immunomodulation; it is believed to suppress T-helper 2 (Th2)-dominant inflammation by promoting a balanced Th1/Th2 immune response and activating regulatory T cells. [5, 12] This leads to changes in inflammatory markers, such as increased production of TGF-β and IL-12 and reduced levels of IgE and eosinophils. L-92 is available as a functional food ingredient and is sold in various consumer products, including drinks, powders, and capsules. [2, 8, 9]
