Overview
Lactobacillus acidophilus L92 is an investigational probiotic bacterial strain being evaluated for the treatment of intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) in critically ill patients. Developed by researchers at Xinhua Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, this live biotherapeutic agent is designed to mitigate IAH-induced damage to the intestinal mucosal barrier. Its mechanism of action involves the modulation of the gut microbiome and metabolic pathways, specifically those related to amino acid biosynthesis, which helps prevent inflammatory infiltration, mucosal congestion, and epithelial damage. In clinical settings, it is being studied both as a monotherapy and in combination with the traditional Chinese medicine Dachengqi Decoction to improve gastrointestinal function and reduce the incidence of sepsis in patients with severe abdominal hypertension.
