Overview

Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-10A is a specific strain of the species Lactobacillus acidophilus, a Gram-positive, rod-shaped, non-sporulating, anaerobic bacterium commonly found in the human gastrointestinal tract and oral cavity. L. acidophilus strains are widely used as probiotics due to their ability to survive acidic environments and confer health benefits by modulating gut microbiota, inhibiting pathogenic bacteria (such as Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium perfringens), supporting digestion, and enhancing immune function[1][4]. The mechanism of action involves competitive exclusion of pathogens through adhesion to epithelial cells via S-layer proteins, production of lactic acid that lowers intestinal pH unfavorably for pathogens, and modulation of host immune responses[1][4]. Strain-specific effects may include support for antibiotic-associated diarrhea prevention or adjunctive therapy in gastrointestinal disorders; however, clinical evidence is often strain-dependent.
