Overview

Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5 is a specific, well-documented probiotic strain of the bacterium Lactobacillus acidophilus. It was developed by the company Chr. Hansen (now part of Novonesis) and has been used in food products and dietary supplements since 1979. [1, 3] The strain is often studied and used in combination with Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12. [1] Research indicates that L. acidophilus LA-5 has immunomodulatory properties. In studies on peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with ulcerative colitis, it was shown to augment the secretion of both pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IFN-γ) and anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10, TGF-β). Another study in an experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model of multiple sclerosis found that LA-5 supplementation improved disease severity by modulating the pentose phosphate pathway and activating the Nrf2 antioxidant pathway. It is commercially available and marketed for supporting digestive and women's health. [3, 6]
