Overview

Lactobacillus acidophilus LA02 is a specific probiotic bacterial strain (deposited as DSM 21717) developed by the Italian company Probiotical S.p.A. It is a Gram-positive, lactic acid-producing bacterium characterized by its ability to survive gastrointestinal transit and adhere to mucosal surfaces. LA02 has been clinically evaluated for its role in maintaining and restoring healthy microbial populations in the gut and vaginal environments. Specifically, it has been studied for the prevention of recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) due to its antagonistic activity against Candida species, often delivered via specialized slow-release vaginal tablets. Additionally, research has explored its potential systemic effects on cognitive function and metabolic health (weight loss) when administered orally, frequently in combination with other probiotic strains such as Bifidobacterium lactis BS01.
