Overview

Lactobacillus acidophilus lysates are a type of postbiotic, which are preparations of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that can confer health benefits. These lysates are produced by breaking open the cells of Lactobacillus acidophilus, a probiotic bacterium naturally found in the human body. [10, 14] The resulting substance contains various cellular components like peptidoglycans, proteins, and DNA, which have been shown to have immunomodulatory effects. [14] In preclinical studies, L. acidophilus lysates have demonstrated the ability to enhance anti-tumor immunity, particularly when combined with checkpoint inhibitors like anti-CTLA-4 antibodies in colorectal cancer models. [2, 5] The mechanism involves modulating the tumor microenvironment by increasing the presence of beneficial immune cells such as CD8+ T cells and effector memory T cells, while decreasing immunosuppressive cells like regulatory T cells (Tregs) and M2-type macrophages. [5] Beyond oncology, these lysates are also explored for their antimicrobial properties and are used as ingredients in supplements and cosmetic products. [1, 23]
