Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lactobacillus acidophilus SLAM_LAA02 is a novel probiotic strain isolated from human infants, currently being investigated for its neuroprotective and immunomodulatory properties in the context of Parkinson's disease (PD). Preclinical studies in *Caenorhabditis elegans* and rotenone-induced mouse models demonstrate that SLAM_LAA02 administration can ameliorate motor dysfunction, restore gut microbial diversity, and enhance intestinal barrier integrity. Mechanistically, the strain modulates the microbiota-gut-brain axis, leading to a reduction in alpha-synuclein expression and aggregation, alongside the upregulation of neuroprotective factors such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and the modulation of neuroinflammatory signaling.
