Overview

Lactobacillus animalis, recently reclassified as Ligilactobacillus animalis, is a species of gram-positive, homofermentative lactic acid bacteria. It is naturally found in the gastrointestinal tracts of animals and humans. As a probiotic, L. animalis is recognized for its role in promoting gut health by enhancing the growth of beneficial bacteria, inhibiting pathogenic microorganisms, and improving digestion and nutrient absorption. Its mechanisms of action include the production of lactic acid, which helps create an acidic gut environment unfavorable to pathogens, and contributing to the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that support the integrity of the gut lining and reduce inflammation. It is used in both human dietary supplements and veterinary applications, often in combination with other probiotic strains, to support digestive health and modulate the immune system.
