Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lactobacillus brevis is a probiotic bacterium known for its ability to produce lactic acid and its diverse beneficial effects on human and animal health. It modulates both gut and oral microbiota, influences the gut-brain axis, and produces metabolites such as Gamma Amino Butyric Acid (GABA) and butyric acid, which contribute to neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities. This bacterium is being investigated for its potential in treating conditions such as depression, mucositis, chronic periodontitis, dental caries, non-alcoholic fatty liver, and secondary bacterial pneumonia in severe COVID-19 patients. It also shows promise in promoting oral health, mitigating cisplatin-induced cardiotoxicity, and improving livestock performance under heat stress.
