Overview

Lactobacillus brevis CD2 lozenges are a probiotic-based biologic therapeutic product developed for the treatment of chronic periodontitis. [1] The product is developed by Next Gen Pharma India Pvt. Ltd. and has also been associated with CD Pharma India Pvt. Ltd. The active ingredient is the probiotic bacterial strain Lactobacillus brevis CD2, which is formulated as oral lozenges. [1, 2] The product has been marketed under the brand name Inersan®. [3] The drug's mechanism of action involves anti-inflammatory effects mediated through its arginine deiminase enzyme activity, which prevents nitric oxide generation and reduces inflammatory markers including prostaglandin E2, matrix metalloproteinases, and various cytokines. [2, 4, 5] The lozenges are indicated for the treatment of chronic periodontitis and have been evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials examining their clinical and microbiological effects. [1] The treatment has demonstrated efficacy in improving periodontal clinical parameters and reducing pathogenic bacteria in the oral cavity. [1, 2]
