Overview

Lactobacillus BSL_PS6 is a specific strain of the Gram-positive bacterium *Lactobacillus plantarum* (recently reclassified as *Lactiplantibacillus plantarum*) that has been isolated and characterized for its probiotic potential. It is distinguished by its robust ability to survive gastrointestinal transit, demonstrating high tolerance to acidic environments and bile salts. The strain's primary therapeutic interest lies in its cholesterol-lowering activity, which is mediated through the production of bile salt hydrolase (BSH). This enzyme deconjugates bile salts, leading to increased fecal excretion of bile acids and a subsequent reduction in serum cholesterol levels as the body utilizes systemic cholesterol to synthesize new bile salts. Additionally, Lactobacillus BSL_PS6 exhibits antimicrobial activity against enteric pathogens such as *Staphylococcus aureus* and *Escherichia coli*, and possesses antioxidant properties, making it a candidate for use in functional foods and as a live biotherapeutic for metabolic and gastrointestinal health.
