Overview

Lactobacillus casei BL23 (recently reclassified as Lacticaseibacillus casei BL23) is a non-pathogenic, Gram-positive probiotic bacterium belonging to the lactic acid bacteria group. It is widely utilized in biomedical research for its potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. In preclinical models of colorectal cancer (CRC) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), BL23 has demonstrated the ability to protect against intestinal damage and tumor formation. Its mechanism of action involves the modulation of the host's immune system, specifically by promoting a Th17-biased immune response and stimulating the production of regulatory cytokines such as IL-10, IL-17, IL-22, and TGF-β. While primarily studied in academic settings, it represents a candidate for development as a live biotherapeutic product (LBP).
