Overview

Lactobacillus casei BLn2401 is a specific probiotic strain characterized as an immunobiotic for its potential to modulate the immune system through the gut-immune axis. In clinical research, it is utilized as a component of a multi-strain probiotic consortium (often alongside Lactobacillus salivarius BL2201 and Bifidobacterium breve BL3406) for the adjunctive treatment of newly diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The strain functions by modulating the gut microbiota, which in turn influences systemic inflammation, leading to significant reductions in disease activity scores (DAS28), inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and patient-reported pain. When used as a supplement to conventional disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (cDMARDs), it has been shown to enhance remission rates and reduce corticosteroid dependence.
