Lactobacillus crispatus is a rod-shaped, lactic acid-producing bacterial species commonly found in the vaginal microbiome and gastrointestinal tract. It is considered beneficial for health, particularly in maintaining vaginal microecological balance and resisting lower reproductive tract infections. Its mechanism of action involves producing lactic acid, which lowers the pH of the environment (typically below 4.5), and releasing hydrogen peroxide and other antibiotic-like substances to inhibit the proliferation of pathogens. It also engages in competitive exclusion, preventing the adhesion and colonization of harmful microorganisms, and modulates the host immune system. Some strains of Lactobacillus crispatus are commercially available as probiotics and are being investigated as live biotherapeutic products for preventing and treating conditions such as bacterial vaginosis (BV), recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, and preterm birth.
