Overview

Lactobacillus curvatus HY7601 is a probiotic bacterial strain, isolated from kimchi and developed by the South Korean company hy Co., Ltd. (formerly Korea Yakult). [3, 4, 5, 7] It is primarily researched for its benefits to metabolic health, often in a synergistic combination with *Lactobacillus plantarum* KY1032. [1, 2] Clinical and preclinical studies have shown that supplementation with HY7601 can reduce body weight, visceral fat, and waist circumference, and lower plasma triglycerides. [9] The proposed mechanism of action involves modulation of the gut microbiota, which in turn influences host metabolism. [5] Specifically, it has been shown to down-regulate pro-inflammatory genes in adipose tissue, up-regulate fatty acid oxidation-related genes in the liver, and inhibit adipogenesis. [5, 10] It may also play a role in neuroprotection, with preclinical studies suggesting it could delay the progression of Alzheimer's disease. [4] The strain has been granted New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) and self-affirmed Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status in the United States, and has been approved by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) as a functional ingredient for helping to reduce body fat. [2, 3, 4]
