Overview

Lactobacillus delbrueckii is a species of probiotic bacteria with immunomodulatory properties. [1, 6] An ex vivo study investigating its effects on peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) found that L. delbrueckii significantly increased the gene expression of the regulatory T-cell transcription factor FOXP3 and the anti-inflammatory cytokines Interleukin-10 (IL-10) and Interleukin-2 (IL-2). [8] It also showed a trend towards decreasing the expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6. These findings suggest that L. delbrueckii has a tolerogenic function and may be a candidate for developing complementary therapies for autoimmune diseases like SLE. [2, 4] It has also been studied in a clinical trial for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). [1, 5]
