Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lactobacillus delbrueckii and Lactobacillus fermentum are probiotic bacterial species that have been investigated for the treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). In a clinical trial conducted by Ain Shams University, these probiotics were evaluated for their ability to improve symptoms in IBS patients, either as a standalone therapy compared to the prokinetic itopride hydrochloride or as an adjunctive treatment. The mechanism of action involves the modulation of the gut microbiota to correct dysbiosis, enhancement of the intestinal mucosal barrier, and potential reduction of low-grade inflammation and visceral hypersensitivity. These effects aim to alleviate common IBS symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits.
