Overview

Lactobacillus delbrueckii bulgaricus is a Gram-positive, rod-shaped lactic acid bacterium utilized as a probiotic and live biotherapeutic. Historically recognized as a yogurt starter culture, it has been developed for pharmaceutical applications, including a previously marketed product by Marlex Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of fever blisters and cold sores. Its therapeutic effects are mediated through the modulation of the gut microbiome, production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like acetate, and regulation of the host immune system. Clinical research indicates potential benefits in reducing serum triglycerides and improving antioxidant capacity in conditions such as gestational diabetes and obesity, although its efficacy in weight reduction remains a subject of ongoing study.
