Overview

Lactobacillus delbrueckii DM8909 is a specific probiotic bacterial strain belonging to the Lactobacillus genus. It has been studied for its potential therapeutic effects, particularly in the context of vaginal health and bacterial vaginosis. This strain exhibits probiotic properties such as auto-aggregation, hydrophobicity, adhesion to cervical epithelial cells, and survivability under oxidative stress. In vitro studies have shown that L. delbrueckii DM8909 can inhibit the growth and adhesion of Gardnerella vaginalis—a key pathogen in bacterial vaginosis—reduce biofilm formation by G. vaginalis, and modulate host inflammatory responses (e.g., decreasing interleukin-8 expression induced by pathogens or hydrogen peroxide). The antibacterial activity is partly attributed to bacteriocin production (such as plantaricin), which can alter gene expression related to virulence and antimicrobial resistance in target pathogens[1][2].
