Overview

Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus LB42 is a probiotic bacterial strain traditionally used as a yogurt starter. It has been evaluated for its safety and functional benefits in healthy adults, demonstrating the ability to improve gastrointestinal function, enhance immune responses (specifically IgA and IgG), and improve sleep quality. Mechanistically, LB42 adheres to intestinal epithelial cells, modulates the gut microbiota by enriching short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing genera like Lachnospira and Parabacteroides, and suppresses pro-inflammatory taxa such as Enterococcus and Fusobacterium. Clinical evidence indicates it reduces gastrointestinal symptoms and fecal calprotectin levels, supporting its use as a multifunctional food supplement for host immunity and microbial balance.
