Overview

Lactobacillus farciminis is a species of lactic acid bacteria investigated for its probiotic properties. It is being studied for its potential to alleviate stress-induced visceral hypersensitivity, a key symptom of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). [1, 5] Research suggests its mechanism of action involves modulating the gut-brain axis, strengthening the intestinal barrier, and exerting anti-inflammatory effects. [1, 4] Specifically, it has been shown to prevent increases in colonic paracellular permeability, inhibit the phosphorylation of myosin light chain (MLC) in colonocytes, and reduce the expression of the neuronal activation marker Fos in the spinal cord and brain regions associated with stress and pain. [1, 2, 5] Some of these effects may be mediated by the release of nitric oxide (NO) in the colon. [2, 4] The developer Lallemand has sponsored clinical research into its effects. [15] Lactobacillus farciminis is also used in animal nutrition, both in livestock and companion animals, to support gut health and improve performance. [3, 7, 8]
