Overview

Lactobacillus fermentum 338-1-1 is a candidate probiotic bacterial strain investigated for its potential application in biodefense and the enhancement of passive immunity. Developed by researchers at the University of Tartu with support from the Estonian Science Foundation, the strain was evaluated in a Phase 1 clinical trial to assess its safety, tolerability, and persistence in the human gastrointestinal tract following oral administration. The strain is intended to bolster the host's biological defenses against bioterrorism agents, such as *Bacillus anthracis*, through mechanisms including competitive exclusion of pathogens and modulation of the mucosal immune response. As a live biotherapeutic product, it aims to provide a non-specific protective barrier and enhance the body's natural resistance to infection.
