Lactobacillus fermentum LC40 (also known as CECT5716) is a probiotic strain originally isolated from human breast milk. It is primarily utilized for the prevention and treatment of infectious mastitis in lactating women. The strain functions by colonizing the mammary glands following oral administration, where it competes with pathogenic bacteria such as *Staphylococcus aureus* and *Streptococcus* species. It also exhibits immunomodulatory properties, potentially reducing inflammation and pain associated with mastitis. Research into this strain was pioneered by the Complutense University of Madrid, and it is commercially available as a live biotherapeutic or dietary supplement, often marketed under the Hereditum brand by Kerry Group (formerly Biosearch Life).
