Overview

Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 (L. fermentum ME-3) is a specific patented strain of probiotic bacteria known for its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. [3, 5, 12] It was originally isolated in 1995 from the intestinal tract of a healthy one-year-old child by scientists at the University of Tartu in Estonia. [2, 6, 9] The university holds patents for this strain in Estonia, Russia, and the USA. [5] L. fermentum ME-3 is unique because it is one of the few probiotic strains that contains a complete enzymatic system for synthesizing, absorbing, and regenerating glutathione, the body's primary antioxidant. [2, 3, 4, 9] By boosting glutathione levels, it helps protect cells from oxidative stress, supports detoxification processes, and regenerates other antioxidants like vitamins C and E. [3, 4, 8] Clinical studies have demonstrated its benefits in various health areas. It has been shown to improve symptoms of mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in both the skin and blood. [1] Additionally, research suggests it supports cardiovascular health by lowering oxidized LDL cholesterol, reducing inflammation markers like hs-CRP and IL-6, and improving the overall lipid profile. [3, 8] It is marketed as a dietary supplement in various products. [6, 11]
