Overview

Lactobacillus fermentum VRI 003, also known by the brand name PCC®, is a probiotic biologic developed by Probiomics Ltd. It is a specific strain of the Gram-positive bacterium *Lactobacillus fermentum*. This probiotic has been clinically studied for its ability to modulate the immune system. Research has shown its potential benefits in improving the severity of atopic dermatitis in children and reducing the incidence and duration of respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses, particularly in athletes. [1, 3, 7] The proposed mechanism of action involves the modulation of the mucosal immune system. [2] The strain exhibits mannose-specific adhesion to Peyer's patches in the gut, which is believed to influence cytokine production (such as increasing interferon-gamma) and enhance mucosal immunity. [10, 2] It is administered orally, typically in freeze-dried powder form within gelatin capsules.
