Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lactobacillus gasseri BNR17 is a specific probiotic strain of the species *Lactobacillus gasseri*, originally isolated from human breast milk. It is used as a dietary supplement and live biotherapeutic product, primarily for its potential benefits in metabolic health, including anti-obesity effects and improvement of gut health. Preclinical studies have shown that administration of L. gasseri BNR17 can reduce body weight gain, adipose tissue mass, and serum leptin/insulin levels in animal models by upregulating fatty acid oxidation genes (ACO, CPT1, PPARα, PPARδ) and downregulating fatty acid synthesis genes (SREBP-1c, ACC). Clinical trials in overweight or obese adults have demonstrated reductions in visceral fat area and waist circumference after supplementation with this strain for 12 weeks[2][5][6]. Additionally, randomized controlled trials suggest it may improve symptoms of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D), including abdominal pain and stool frequency[8]. The mechanism involves modulation of host metabolism via changes to the gut microbiota composition and enhancement of intestinal barrier function.
