Overview

Lactobacillus gasseri CCFM1201 is a specific probiotic strain of the species Lactobacillus gasseri. It has demonstrated significant inhibitory effects against Gardnerella vaginalis, the primary pathogen responsible for bacterial vaginosis (BV). In both in vitro and in vivo models, L. gasseri CCFM1201 inhibits biofilm formation by G. vaginalis, reduces sialidase activity, modulates inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β, and improves histopathological features of BV including epithelial cell exfoliation and tissue inflammation. The strain can be formulated into microbial inocula, medicinal products (including drugs), or female hygiene products for the prevention or treatment of bacterial vaginosis and maintenance of vaginal health[2][4][1]. Its mechanism involves competitive exclusion of pathogens through adhesion to epithelial cells, production of organic acids to maintain acidic pH (<4.5), secretion of antimicrobial substances, and modulation of local immune responses[2][3][4].
