Lactobacillus gasseri E16B7 is a specific probiotic bacterial strain that has been investigated for its potential role in biodefence, specifically to provide passive immunity against bioterrorism agents. Developed by researchers at the University of Tartu in Estonia with support from the Estonian Science Foundation, this strain was selected for its ability to persist in the human gastrointestinal tract and its potential to inhibit the colonization of pathogenic organisms. In a Phase 1 clinical trial (NCT00116285), the strain was administered orally to healthy volunteers to evaluate its safety, tolerability, and colonization patterns. The therapeutic concept relies on the competitive exclusion of pathogens and the enhancement of the mucosal immune barrier, serving as a biological countermeasure against ingested biothreats.
