Overview

Lactobacillus gasseri KBL697 is a proprietary strain of the probiotic bacterium *Lactobacillus gasseri*, originally isolated from vaginal samples of healthy donors. It is being developed primarily as a live biotherapeutic product for the treatment and prevention of inflammatory diseases such as ulcerative colitis and psoriasis. Preclinical studies have shown that oral administration of L. gasseri KBL697 reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines (including IFN-gamma, IL-6, IL-17A) and increases anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, likely through modulation of immune cell populations such as regulatory T cells and dendritic cells in the gut-associated lymphoid tissue. The mechanism involves modulation of host immune responses via microbial metabolites (e.g., acetate, butyrate), alteration in gut microbiota composition (notably increased Prevotella), and upregulation of genes involved in skin regeneration when used for psoriasis[2][3][4][6]. The strain’s lipoteichoic acid appears to play a key role in its anti-inflammatory effects[2]. Developed by KoBioLabs, it has reached Phase 2 clinical trials for both ulcerative colitis and psoriasis[1][5].
