Overview

Lactobacillus gasseri OLL2716, commonly known as LG21, is a probiotic bacterial strain developed by Meiji Co., Ltd. It is specifically selected for its high acid tolerance, allowing it to survive the gastric environment and adhere to the gastric mucosa. The strain is widely marketed in Japan as a functional food product (yogurt) intended to suppress *Helicobacter pylori* colonization and alleviate symptoms of functional dyspepsia. Beyond its gastric applications, clinical research has investigated its potential to prevent small bowel injury induced by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like aspirin and to modulate intestinal dysbiosis. Its mechanism of action involves competitive inhibition of pathogens, production of lactic acid to lower local pH, and enhancement of the host's mucosal barrier function and immune response.
