Overview

Lactobacillus helveticus NS8 is a specific probiotic bacterial strain of Lactobacillus helveticus identified for its potential neuropsychological benefits. Major research has focused on its supplementation in preclinical models, particularly for its ability to modulate the microbiota–gut–brain axis and exert antidepressant and anxiolytic effects. In rat models, NS8 supplementation alleviated depressive-like behaviors, improved neuroendocrine markers (such as reducing corticotropin-releasing hormone and norepinephrine while increasing brain-derived neurotrophic factor, glucocorticoid receptor, dopamine, and serotonin metabolites), and altered gut microbiota composition by increasing the abundance of L. helveticus and reducing opportunistic pathogens and pro-inflammatory fungi. This strain has also shown antianxiety effects and improved cognition in animal models. The underlying mechanism centers on probiotic-mediated modulation of mammalian gut microbiota and associated neurochemical and endocrine pathways, including influence on neurotransmitter systems and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis[1][2][4].
